Hollow Knight's Void, Explained: A 2026 Deep Dive Into the Abyss

Hollow Knight lore unravels the mysterious Void and its clash with Radiance, shaping Hallownest's dark, compelling narrative.

I have a confession: I have played Hollow Knight enough times that I should be able to explain the Void without checking the wiki. I cannot. Every time I think I have it sorted, I descend into the Abyss, get jumped by a pile of shadow babies, lose my Shade, and remember that this game's lore is basically a black lagoon with a PhD. In 2026, with Hollow Knight: Silksong finally out and Hornet having had her own terrifying adventure in Pharloom, coming back to Hallownest feels like visiting a haunted museum where the exhibits want to kill me. And at the center of that museum? Void. Delicious, terrifying, plot-critical Void.

So, What Is the Void? A Beginner's Guide to Black Goo

Void is one of the two opposing forces in Hollow Knight. Its eternal enemy is the light, represented by Radiance. When I first met Void, it was not a friendly little puddle. It was chaotic, unharnessed, and lashing out at everything it touched. In its basic physical form, Void shows up as the darkness that overflows from the Abyss and the liquid that fills the Void Sea. It also gives form to the siblings, those shadow entities that rise from the depths to attack the Knight when he first descends to the lowest levels. And if that were not enough, it forms the Shade that remains when the Knight's physical body is killed. Thanks, Void. Very supportive.

I used to think Void was just the game's way of saying bad darkness. But it is so much more. It permeates almost everything in Hallownest. You can ignore it for a while, but it is always there, leaking from the Abyss, shaping the Knight's abilities, and making the Pale King's family tree look like a spilled ink bottle.

The Pale King's Parenting Plan Was a Void-Based Disaster

Long before the events of Hollow Knight, the Pale King, original Monarch of Hallownest, tried to use the power of Void to seal away Radiance. This resulted in the creation of the Hollow Knight, Hornet, and the Knight. The King chose the Hollow Knight as his best option, and though it failed, his actions set in motion the events that make up Hollow Knight. As someone who has made questionable decisions in video games, I can relate. I once used a legendary sword as a lockpick. But the Pale King looked at an infinite dark ocean and thought, Yes, let us make children out of that.

The main protagonist, a nameless, voiceless bug known simply as the Knight, would not exist without the considerable power of Void. Created by the Pale King as a potential vessel to contain Radiance, the Knight was eventually discarded in favor of their sibling, the Hollow Knight. Left in the bottom of the Abyss with the countless other discarded vessels, the Knight eventually made their way to the exit. Shortly after, they left Hallownest, not to return until the events of the game. Honestly, if my dad threw me into a bottomless pit and said maybe the other kid is better, I would also leave for a few centuries.

When the Knight is first introduced, there is not much of a hint about their origins in the Abyss. But as they journey through Hallownest, gaining abilities and spells, it becomes clear that their strength is tied directly to the darkness. Each spell is upgraded to a darker form, and the descriptions mention the Abyss and shadow. This all points to a deep connection with the Void. Nothing shows the Knight's fundamental connection to the darkness like the Voidheart charm.

Voidheart: The Abyss Finally Gets a Leash

The Voidheart charm is acquired late in Hollow Knight and plays a central role in multiple endings. As I mentioned, Void is in a raw, unharnessed state when first encountered. Acquiring the Voidheart allows the Knight to harness the power of the Void, uniting it under their will. Once this occurs, the Void is no longer a threat to the Knight, and they are free to pass through the Abyss without being attacked. That is a glow-up. One minute I am getting bodied by shadow siblings, the next I am their weird little king.

To achieve the Dream No More ending, I need to acquire the Voidheart charm, then when Hornet creates an opening, use the Dream Nail on the Hollow Knight, and finally defeat Radiance. Defeating Radiance is a challenge in itself. Learn her moveset, stay dedicated, and victory will come. Near the end of the fight, the Knight calls the shades of their siblings into the fight. Near the finale, the shade of the Hollow Knight enters the fray, creating a weak spot for the Knight to attack. The Knight fully embraces the Void inside, changes into their shade form, and utterly consumes Radiance. After the fight, the shades that had been in the Abyss can be seen returning to the ground. I cried a little. Then I died to a primal aspid on the way back. Classic.

For the Godmaster DLC ending, players must have access to the Godmaster DLC. Once acquired, follow these steps: deliver a Delicate Flower to the Godseeker, found in the southwestern corner of Royal Waterways in the Junk Pit. This is not completely necessary, but is generally considered the good version. After acquiring the Voidheart charm, visit Godhome. Complete the Pantheon of Hallownest. Defeat Absolute Radiance. Getting through the pantheon is an incredibly difficult task, but with perseverance, it is manageable. The end of the fight with Absolute Radiance is similar to the Dream No More Radiance fight, with a couple of slight differences. Instead of the siblings appearing, the Knight turns into the Void Entity. With their power fully realized, the Entity destroys Absolute Radiance, leaving only essence in her wake. Once the fight is over, Void is seen attempting to leak from the Godseeker in the Junk Pit. If the flower was delivered, it seems to contain the Void. If no flower was delivered, Void appears to escape before the scene cuts to black. So, the moral is: always deliver flowers to mysterious god-seeking bugs. That is just good manners.

Why Void Still Matters in 2026

Void exists in some form throughout all of Hallownest. From the depths of the Abyss to the Temple of the Black Egg in the Forgotten Crossroads, darkness leaks from the Abyss and ascends throughout all the realms. It is the primary means by which the hero of the story is capable of defeating their enemy. It is the very foundation of the Knight's existence. And in 2026, after Silksong has finally given us Hornet's solo nightmare in Pharloom, returning to Hallownest is a reminder of how elegantly Team Cherry built a world out of crumbs. The Void is not just a spooky substance. It is the game's thesis statement: the thing that makes you might also be the thing that destroys you, unless you learn to harness it. Also, it makes a great cloak.

Void Thing What It Does My Reaction
Abyss darkness Leaks upward and ruins everyone's day I stepped in it. Rude.
Siblings Rise from the depths to attack They are just misunderstood. And stabby.
Shade Drops when I die and steals my Geo Give it back, you smoky gremlin.
Voidheart Unites Void under the Knight's will Finally, a leash for the abyss.
Void Entity Deletes Absolute Radiance Absolutely terrifying. 10/10.

So yes, I still do not fully understand the Void. But I love it anyway. It is the ink in Hollow Knight's pen, the shadow behind every ending, and the reason the Knight is both a hero and a horrible little void creature. In 2026, that is still one of gaming's best tricks. Now if you will excuse me, I need to go sit in the Abyss and think about my choices. 🖤
