Dancing With Uumuu: A Fog Canyon Boss Diary

Hollow Knight Uumuu boss fight guide: reach Fog Canyon’s Teacher’s Archives, use Quirrel to expose Uumuu’s core, and dodge lightning patiently.

I still remember the first time I drifted into Fog Canyon in Hollow Knight. I had just gotten the Dream Nail from the Seer in the Resting Grounds, and I felt like a real hotshot. The game had told me to hunt the Dreamers, so I puffed out my chest and went looking for Monomon the Teacher. Big mistake. Fog Canyon is no picnic, and the Teacher's Archives are basically a boss rush with extra jellyfish. Even in 2026, coming back to Hallownest for a fresh run, Uumuu still handed me my hat the first few tries.

Cut to the chase: to reach Monomon, you need the Dream Nail, and you need a way into eastern Fog Canyon. I used the Shade Cloak to slip through the Shade Gate near Cornifer, but you can also grab Isma's Tear and swim through the acid pool opposite Leg Eater's place in the Fungal Wastes. I had both by the time I was done, and I was glad. The archives are a maze, and the last thing I wanted was to get lost with a jellyfish on my tail.

The first time Uumuu floated into view, I did what any confident Knight does: I swung my nail like a maniac. Nothing. The gelatinous membrane swallowed every hit. I felt like a rookie all over again. Then Quirrel showed up, and I swear I heard angels singing. Good old Quirrel sliced the membrane open, and suddenly Uumuu's core was exposed. That is the whole dance: wait for Quirrel, hit the core, then back off before the membrane comes back. Don't get greedy. Greed is how you get zapped.

Here is the fight in a nutshell:

Threat What it does My survival note
Chase lightning Locks onto you and leaves a trail of bursts Keep moving, don't panic
Arena lightning Bursts across the arena in two patterns The two lowest platforms are usually safe if Uumuu isn't there
Acid pool Slows your movement badly Stay out of it, seriously
Contact Deals one mask of damage Give the jellyfish some personal space

My first death was pure comedy. I dodged a lightning trail, backed into acid, and moved so slowly I could have written a postcard. Uumuu bumped me, and I was down a mask. My second death was worse: I got greedy after Quirrel popped the core, tried to sneak in one extra hit, and ate a lightning burst for my trouble. That was when I learned to keep my cool. Uumuu is not a damage race. It is a patience test with a jellyfish hat.

A few things saved me:

  • Wait for Quirrel. He is the MVP. Do not waste time whacking the membrane.

  • Stay low. The lower platforms are your safe-ish islands when the lightning starts.

  • Use Monarch Wings. They make hopping between platforms way less stressful.

  • Punish the core, not the chase. When the core is exposed, get your hits in and then reset.

  • Keep your cool. If you are on your last legs, focus on dodging first. Damage can wait.

When Uumuu finally popped, I felt like a million geo. I walked deeper into the archives, found Monomon's resting place, and used the Dream Nail. One Dreamer down. The Black Egg Temple was one step closer to opening, and I was one step closer to another ending. It is not the hardest fight in Hollow Knight, but it is a neat little lesson in patience. In 2026 or not, Uumuu is still a jellyfish jerk with a good gimmick. And Quirrel? Quirrel is still the real hero of that room. 😤
